seasonal_affective_disorder_rate
A new study published in the Washington D.C. area polled almost 2,000 students and asked them questions to determine the seasonal affective disorder rate of adolescents in the region. The survey asked them about their mood and whether the changing seasons was a large reason. It also used the Seasonal Pattern Assessment Questionnaire to give a standardized range of answers for the participants.

The study found that between 1.7 and 5.5% of kids age 9-19 have Seasonal Affective Disorder. The study shed some light on the subject but also raised questions of the role puberty plays regarding Seasonal Affective Disorder. The study itself can be found here:

Seasonal Affective Disorder Lights Can Help

seasonal_affective_disorder_lights
Seasonal Affective Disorder lights are the standard therapy in treating this disorder. These lights mimic the effects of the sun on the body inside a room. This is helpful, because simplistically, seasonal affective disorder affects those who live in cloudy and overcast areas which hardly see the sun. The sun is a catalyst for a reaction in the body for vitamin D. For those not supplementing this lost vitamin D, health can suffer.

The Mayo Clinic, experts in diagnosing all forms of disease recommend that you talk with your doctor about the proper way to use a seasonal affective disorder light and to discuss the potential benefits and drawbacks of that treatment.
